Resident Evil Village Nearly Had Evil Mermaids, Says Leak
The Resident Evil franchise is in no short supply of bizarre and disturbing monsters that inhabit the world. From zombified humans and mutated creatures to bioweapons created by the Umbrella Corporation. We’ve even seen vampires and lycanthropes introduced as recently as 2021’s Resident Evil Village. There’s seemingly nowhere the developers won’t go for the sake of horror, though, not all ideas can be implemented in a single game. It’s inevitable that some creatures will never see the light of day, but however, one type of swamp creature that almost appeared in RE Village appears to have slipped through the cracks thanks to a well-known leaker.
A series of Tweets from Dusk Golem details information concerning Moreau’s section of Resident Evil Village, namely, the introduction of a mermaid-type enemy that would’ve proved quite frustrating for players. In short, these foes would’ve dwelled in the water as well as on land, and their actions would differ depending on where they spotted the player. In water, they would quickly pursue Ethan, forcing him onto land where they couldn’t move quite as quickly. On land, however, they had another frustrating ability, screeching and causing Ethan to slow down in response. A cherry on top of this is that same screech would also summon a “sorta slimy, Tyrant-like creature” that would serve as the main threat on land.
(1/7) I was thinking about this, so going to talk about it. Moreau’s area RE8 was trimmed a lot, I don’t think I’ve actually sat down & fully explained what I knew about Moreau’s swamp area pre it being trimmed, so I think I’ll do so now.

In the end, the mermaids and various other enemies and gameplay components that were going to be placed in the Moreau area of Resident Evil Village were scrapped due to time constraints, giving the developers the ability to work more on Castle Dimitrescu and Heisenberg’s factory. Of course, while Dusk Golem has proven very reliable in the past, none of this information has been confirmed by Capcom yet, so it’s worth taking with a grain of salt.
