Aliens: Dark Descent Revealed As New Squad-Based Shooter (VIDEO)

Aliens: Dark Descent

Playing almost opposite to the Predators series, the Aliens series trades the wide-open planetary hunting grounds for tight, confined spaces within spaceships and various facilities for many of its storylines. The limited space adds a whole new level of horror, especially when players personally face off against these Aliens in games like Alien: Isolation. The first-person perspective gives fans an even more claustrophobic feeling as they search for survival while being hunted by an unseen and unkillable monster. It’ll be interesting then to see what developers do with the upcoming title, Aliens: Dark Descent, a title that was just recently announced by Focus Entertainment and Tindalos Interactive.

Aliens: Dark Descent was recently revealed as a part of the Summer Games Fest event, and while it has yet to receive a release date, fans were granted a very brief taste of what’s to come with a new trailer. The upcoming title appears to focus on more action than suspense or horror, placing fans in control of a squad of Colonial Marines as they embark on a recon mission that goes very wrong. A brief moment within the announcement trailer showcases a top-down perspective but doesn’t really explain much else as far as how the title will be played.

Admittedly, it’s a bit strange to see a top-down perspective for an Aliens title, but it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened. Valve put out Alien Swarm back in 2010, which followed a very similar premise of a squad-based action title amidst an extraterrestrial threat. Like the upcoming Aliens: Dark Descent, that game also granted players a variety of customization options to kit out their marines. The upcoming Dark Descent will also be letting players recruit their squad, potentially meaning there’s a permadeath mechanic for fallen Marines.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what Focus Entertainment and Tindalos Interactive can bring to the franchise. The developers of Aliens: Dark Descent claim that they were inspired by “tactical and CRPG games and packaged in nerve-wracking, real-time action.” In addition, the title is confirmed to have intuitive controls that will not only allow the player to control the squad of marines but also command them as they come face to face with the Aliens.
