Overwatch Almost Had a Jetpack Cat Hero According to Jeff Kaplan
Overwatch is known for its diverse cast of characters. That being said, most of the heroes are either human, an eclectic array of animal-like heroes, cyborgs, and more. You have one side of the spectrum with Soldier 76, the edgy grandpa and standard super soldier – and then there’s the opposite, and less human, side with Winston, the peanut butter loving, genetically engineered, talking gorilla. Between the two are characters fill a whole variety of people both Omnic and Human, including the most recent character to make an appearance, Orisa: a bot redesigned by an 11 year old girl. Within an interview with Jeff Kaplan, it was mentioned that there was even a jetpack cat hero that almost made the roster.
During the beginning stages of Overwatch’s development, Kaplan explains that there was a lot of talk during the early stages of development in terms of how far did they want to take characters. They drew a line with Winston and Road Hog, on the animal side of the line-up. As Overwatch is grounded mostly in science, its genetically enhanced gorilla seemed right there on the edge of what was acceptable. From there, the team would decide what was OK as a character based upon the two cornerstones of Soldier 76 and Winston.
We had done a lot of concepting. We had one hero who was just a hockey player. Literally a hockey player. We later made a Lucio skin for a hockey player. But he was just a hockey player hero. Then there was this one hero that was a huge internal debate on the team because we just loved it so much but it didn’t make it. It was this jetpack and it had this cat that laid in it, like a cat does. Then every once in awhile it would paw at the controls. It was a cat in a jetpack. That was one of those moments that helped define Overwatch. We just went, “Yeah that’s probably too far.” But yes. We had a cat hero.
A jetpack cat does sound a bit far-fetched but would have made a hilarious addition to the cast of characters in Overwatch. Maybe it’s something fans will see in the future in some way, even if just as an easter egg in the form of a poster somewhere on a map. Who knows, maybe Overwatch’s 25th character will be a cat in a Doomfist gauntlet? We’re guessing not, though.
