Overwatch Director Talks Possible Movies And Franchise Spin-Offs
One area Blizzard has always excelled in the Overwatch franchise has been the developer’s ability to build and grow their characters. Each hero has displayed plenty of fleshed-out dialogue, giving some insight into the game’s world, and making the title feel like much more than a video game. As such, several pieces of tie-in media have delved into different characters and their backstories, and it appears Jeff Kaplan and Blizzard have dreams of presenting their universe in all manner of different mediums.
A recent interview, Kaplan explained that Blizzard has never thought of Overwatch as being a single, contained tale. Even as the franchise expands and brings in more story elements with Overwatch 2, he expressed the team hopes that they can someday see the vision of their characters make the transition into the likes of movies, spin-off titles, and more.
We’ve always thought of Overwatch as a universe, not a single game. The original game was the first expression of Overwatch, but we dream of what other forms of media could feature Overwatch. Movies? An animated series? What other game types would everyone love to see in the Overwatch universe? We hope that the characters of Overwatch exist far into the future and are expressed in ways that we can’t even imagine today.”
A film or spin-off based on Overwatch certainly has potential, but neither may happen anytime soon as Blizzard has their eyes on a sequel for the time being. There isn’t too much known about the upcoming Overwatch 2, though it’s confirmed to feature a new story mode that expands on the current state of the in-game universe. It might not be the Overwatch movie fans might eventually hope to see, but considering the high quality of the game’s shorts and cutscenes, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Blizzard continue this trend on the big screen.
Overwatch is currently available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch.
