Horizon Zero Dawn is an open world, third person, action role playing game. It’s set in a post apocalyptic world where robotic beings known as “Machines” rule the world. The character whom the player controls is called Aloy. She is an outcast of mysterious birth and is shunned by her tribe. She lives with a Outcast named Rost who raises her to be a hunter and archer. During her childhood, she falls into an Old World and finds a “Focus”, or in other words, a small Old One device. Due to this, she gains special perceptive abilities as well as the ability to interact with the robotic beings and “Old Ones” technology.
The game features a massive open world for Aloy to explore. Players will also find themselves able to hack some Machines making them makeshift vehicles or even friendly companion. Sadly, the game is exclusive to Sony and the PlayStation 4.
The creators of this amazing soundtrack are: Niels van der Leest, Joris de Man and The Flight, as well as, vocalist Julie Elven and Guerrilla’s Music Supervisor: Lucas van Tol. In an interview with PlayStation.Blog, Tol shared his thoughts on the making of this musical endeavor. When asked what acted as inspiration to the Horizon Zero Dawn soundtrack, Tol explained:
When I started working on the music we didn’t have a game to score against, so we decided to focus on Horizon’s three main pillars: machines, tribes, and beautiful nature.
We started with the tribal music. We asked ourselves, “What would a tribe sound like in the future, after they’ve lost most of their culture?” and also “How can we create something that sounds like tribal music, but isn’t necessarily the tribal music we know today?”
At times, it seems reminiscent of something even Celtic in origin. Due to this, you can almost see the landscape just through the music. Lumbering, giant, animal-like machines, beautiful landscapes spanning as far as the eye can see, and adventure around every corner. Based on this alone, the creators nailed their intent for the sountrack perfectly. You can find this soundtrack, which includes 80 songs covering a total of four wonderful hours of listening bliss, on Spotify and PlayStation Music.
