A Deeper Look Inside Leviathan’s Raid Boss Emperor Calus in Destiny 2 (VIDEO)

Emperor Calus

The final boss of Destiny 2’s Leviathan raid, Emperor Calus, is much more than simply a tough enemy. He is a major figure in the lore of Destiny and one whose story shares threads with that of the big bad of the main campaign, Ghaul. A recent video from YouTuber My Name Is Byf details the story of how Emperor Calus rose to power as well as his relationship with Ghaul and his Consul.

The raid has quite a bit of cinematic lore, but if you want to get into the historical parts of the game’s world, it’s necessary to dig a little deeper. Grimoire cards are no more but that doesn’t mean that the game will stop providing information outside of cutscenes. Some weapons and armor, including all exotics and some legendaries, will have the lore which players can piece together to form the narrative of various characters and species in the game such as the Cabal.

Borrowing information from raid weapons, it appears that Calus was once the leader of the Cabal empire; describing himself as a “Father” to his people and even “the perfect loving God” of his subjects. He staged a Holy Coup in which he attempted to purge the Cabal empire from the hands of the rich and powerful. During the coup, he managed to make his way into Cabal Senate and slaughtered all of its members with rail guns. The rest of the Cabal aristocracy was subjected to public humiliation as Calus stripped them of riches and dignity.

He castrated the Consul, who appears in the main campaign, and sent him into the desert with nothing but the skin on his back. Eventually the Consul met up with the outcast runt Ghaul and raised him. At some point, Ghaul was seen by Emperor Calus in a gladiatorial arena and appointed Primus of the Red Legion for his skill in combat. Ghaul and the Consul later staged a coup upon Calus, exiling him on the Leviathan. The raid seen in Destiny 2 is Emperor Calus’ attempt at regaining his lost glory and enacting his revenge on Ghaul and the Red Legion.

The hardcore version of the raid isn’t quite out yet, so players will need to wait until October to find out more information. PC players will also be able to join the fray on October 24th.
