Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Saying Goodbye To Supply Drops

We’ve learned a lot of what is and what isn’t coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Your favorite classic maps will be making a comeback. The campaign that you wouldn’t play is nowhere to be found, at least for the time being. Battle Royale (with zombies!) makes its entry into the CoD universe. Mods, sadly, remain a maybe. Now we have news that Treyarch is making a massive change to the game.

Over on Reddit, a user revealed that an Activision Support technician addressed the issue directly. A player asked about supply drops, which have been notably missing since the game’s launch. The technician stated that the game won’t included any supply drops, now or in the future. Instead, Treyarch will add in a new system that sounds very much like a microtransaction store. Players will be able to acquire desired items, though how exactly was not specified in the Reddit post. Given the trends in gaming today, premium currency should be the heavy favorite.

A couple of days ago, a now-removed blog post on Activision’s site indicated that changes are coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The publisher and developer have yet to confirm this, so they could still be working on the details. Still, as this came directly from Activision, the new “Supply Stream” system feels like an inevitability.

“The brand-new Supply Stream system now grants you new gear as you progress through tiers. While other players are required to reach each tier organically, Black Ops Pass members can skip 10 tiers per season. What’s that mean? In short, you’ll get the chance to own the newest Uniforms, Weapon Variants and Emotes before everybody else.”

This would be the first Call of Duty game to forgo a loot system since Ghosts five years ago. The deleted blog post indicates that microtransactions may focus on cosmetics when the new system drops. Some companies have learned the hard way that it’s the only acceptable route to go. However, we still lack confirmation either way from Treyarch and Activision, so the permanence remains a rumor at the time being.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

What do you think, gamers? Will Black Ops 4 embrace the Fortnite loot mode? Do you approve of the lack of supply drops? Let us know in the comment section below. And for more gaming news and updates, follow DFTG on Facebook and Twitter!
