The Batman Director Hints At Arkham Asylum Spin-Off (VIDEO)

Batman Director Arkham Asylum

All eyes in the media world this weekend are on Warner Bros. and their big new iteration of the caped crusader with The Batman. The new film continues the trend of making Bruce Wayne and the city of Gotham grounded in ever more gritty realism. With Warner Bros.’s franchise properties being more integrated into their sister streaming platform HBO Max, more DC-focused shows like Peacemaker have been linking their film worlds to television. Even though The Batman has just begun its theatrical run, HBO Max has seemingly already greenlit a Penguin-focused spin-off, as well as a seeming Arkham Asylum series, according to The Batman director.

Canadian publication the Toronto Sun recently shared an interview they conducted with The Batman director Matt Reeves on their official YouTube account. While most of the discussion was focused around The Batman film, the topic of the Batverse surrounding this movie was brought up. While Reeves expresses his intent to make this one film as complete and self-contained as possible, he did see the potential for expansion throughout filming. As he states:

“We’re doing this Penguin … Colin Farrell is like you’ve never [seen] in this movie. He’s incredible and he actually is sort of a scene-stealer because he’s just so funny, he’s just so great. Along the way, we thought, ‘Oh, well maybe we can do this as a series.’ And when I talked to HBO Max, I showed them Colin in the movie and I talked to them about what this could be. And they were like, ‘Let’s do that.’ So we’re doing that and we’re doing another series that connects to Arkham.”

Plans for a spin-off based on Colin Farrell’s villainous Penguin were previously revealed by The Batman director, as well as one centered around the Gotham Police Department. Outside of these projects, this would be the first mention of an Arkham-focused spinoff in the works. It is not yet known specifically how this Arkham Asylum spin-off would tie into the other Batverse projects, or when they can be expected. The Batman 2022 does establish Arkham Asylum in the film, and all of these series would find a good home on HBO Max. Hopefully, these plans are made clearer soon so Batman fans can take another immersive dive into the chaotic world of Gotham City.
