Overwatch Summer Games and New Logo Revealed by Latest Datamining Haul
The past few weeks have seen its fair share of news suggesting that last year’s Overwatch Summer Games will be returning for round 2 this summer. Just last week, players on the Public Test Realm(PTR) of Blizzard’s popular first-person shooter noticed that some additional stats were showing up on their profile pages within the game. Goals, Interceptions, and Saves have all appeared on player profiles, suggesting a return of Lucioball, the unique game mode that was such a smash hit during last year’s Summer Games.
Now, it looks like even more new information has arrived suggesting that the Overwatch Summer Games will be arriving soon within the game. Datamining Reddit user crystallinespark99 discovered two new sprays within the latest PTR build of Overwatch, one of which is a logo for the 2017 Summer Games. Seemingly having chosen to stick with what works, the logo is largely the same as last year’s, with just a few minor tweaks separating one from the other.
The other spray revealed via the dataminer appears to be the new Competitive Play Season 6 logo. The logo depicts an unknown traveler in the foreground with a pyramid and the sun behind them, potentially referencing the game’s Temple of Anubis map. Competitive Play Season 5 has been in full swing since its arrival on May 31, and with the arrival of the below image on the PTR, the season should be wrapping up within the next few weeks, with Season 6 potentially beginning alongside the return of the Overwatch Summer Games 2016.
With the above news pointing at a return of the Summer Games, it is important to point out that game director Jeff Kaplan has previously said that the Overwatch team will not be adding new events to the game, choosing to focus on refining old events instead. That said, it is possible that the inevitable cornucopia of exclusive loot arriving in this year’s Summer Games will be largely the same as what was available last year, perhaps with a few new incentives for players to grind out loot boxes during the event. Personally, I wouldn’t say no to an Overwatch Summer Games Pharah skin.
So, thoughts on the return of the Summer Games? What skins did you miss out on last year that you are hoping to get now that it appears that the event is returning?
