Destiny Director Addresses Rumors Of An Open-World Future
Destiny 2 is still going strong in terms of content with the next being the highly anticipated Shadowkeep expansion. However, the technical limitations will inevitably force Bungie to move onwards to their next installment of the franchise and fans have been coming up with some ideas as to what that might look like such as the possibility of the series going to an open-world model. The developers, however, have stepped in to confirm that while they hope for their world to change and evolve, it’s highly unlikely an open-world experience is the route they’re intending to go.
Franchise director Luke Smith has been releasing posts discussing the franchise as a whole, from where the team started, where Destiny 2 is currently, and where the developers hope to go in the future. The most recent of these posts discusses the changes the team hopes to make in the future and goes into further details as to what an “evolving” world might look like. Smith explains that Destiny 2 cannot continue on indefinitely due to the aforementioned technical limitations and the vision that Bungie has for the Destiny franchise.
Technical limitations aside, we also don’t think making a game that grows forever is Destiny’s path forward. It’s why the second component of the vision is a single, evolving world (to clarify, that single evolving world doesn’t mean there’s only one destination on the Director—that’s not where we’re heading!).
While the team hopes to take the series into a single, evergrowing world this doesn’t mean that franchise will move to an open-world formula in an unannounced Destiny 3 as rumors have hinted at in the past. Instead, Smith explains that the team hopes to create an everchanging world that ebbs and flows with the actions of players and the story itself. The upcoming expansion for Destiny 2, Shadowkeep will be giving fans a taste of this evolving world, with the upcoming Season 8 reaching a conclusion and then setting up the events of Season 9. This trend hopes to continue to help make create and maintain a living, breathing world.
Destiny 2 is currently available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. What mysteries of the franchise would you like to see answered in the future of the Destiny franchise?
