Amazon Alexa Is Now Able To Play Tabletop Games
Amazon’s Alexa can do quite a few things, but the device is mostly known for its ability to perform day-to-day tasks such as home automation, looking up casual information, and playing back online content. Still, the service has a couple of entertaining niches such as being its ability to interface with games like Assassin’s Creed, Destiny, or even a full-on audio-based adventure through The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Now, it has been discovered that players can also play board games through the virtual assistant.
The capacity to play tabletop is possible with the help of Alexa’s “Skills” functionality, allowing fans can download third-party abilities that improve or add variety to the device. One such Skill now freely allows fans to play two popular board games: Ticket to Ride and Ticket to Ride: Europe. A recent report from Polygon (via Prima Games) details the subtleties of this new board game Skill, including the requirement that players have a physical version of game on-hand.
As the report points out, there are some potential issues that could hamper enjoyment such as Alexa reading cards that would normally be hidden from other players. Still, the Ticket To Ride skill gives players a decent way to familiarize themselves with how the game is played from turn to turn. It may not be perfect, but it brings an interesting way to play board games and could potentially provide a legitimately challenging time if given a chance to flourish.
