Disney+ January 2020: What’s On And What’s Gone (UPDATED)

Disney+ January 2020: What's On And What's Gone (VIDEO)

UPDATE: In a statement released to Gizmodo, Disney has addressed the small amount of titles leaving for Disney+ January. The company confirmed that a “very, very small” amount of titles will periodically disappear from the service due to a variety of previously-struck streaming deals. Unfortunately, these selections are locked into various third-party licences until they eventually expire. Original story follows.

Here we are at the start of a new year and there’s plenty for most anyone to look forward to in 2020. Not only are there oodles of selections coming to Netflix in the coming month, but a number of notable movies, shows, and shorts are on the way for Disney+ January 2020. Of the many titles on the way, the biggest additions include the likes of 2019’s live-action Aladdin, The Lion King remake, and Disney Channel animation The Proud Family.

Firstly, several ongoing shows are concluding their run including High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Forky Asks a Question, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum. On top of that, several Disney-themed movies are hitting the service such as tropical bobsledding of Cool Runnings, the extremely diggable Holes, and WWII Air Force chronicle Red Tails. A small batch of Marvel programming additionally makes its debut in the form Runaways Season 3, a Battle of the Bands special for Marvel Rising, and a collection of Marvel Super Hero Adventures.

Quite a few programs from National Geographic are getting fleshed out such as the underwater ‘Drain’ series and One Strange Rock–the latter beginning its migration from Netflix later this month. Several Disney Channel shows as well as various shorts are also being peppered on the service, with Cars-themed toons, classic fare like Destino and The Golden Touch, as well as a new one based on Toy Story 4’s Bo Peep called ‘Lamp Life.’ On that subject, a new series called Short Circuit will also debut fourteen shorts from numerous artists within Disney Animation.

This would normally be the part where we’d send readers on their way, but unfortunately, Disney+ January has a few movies that have left the service in mysterious fashion. As Disney’s service is comprised of its own proprietary material, many had figured Disney+ would forego the need to procedurally shift titles in and out of availability–or, at least. that was the idea. However, fans over on Reddit have noticed fan-favorites such as Home Alone, The Sandlot, and Dr. Dolittle are all currently missing, with little indication as to when they might eventually be back.

What’s Leaving Disney+ in the US (January 2020) from DisneyPlus

While an amazing slate of titles is readying for their Disney+ January debut, one can’t help but linger on the unceremonious removals that have taken place. Hopefully, these films’ stay away from the service are only temporary and are for purely innocent purposes–perhaps an effort to fix encoding errors or upload better quality editions. However, suspicious can easily rise when considering Disney’s past penchant for vaulting popular properties.
