Blizzard Job Listing Hints at Possible Diablo 2 Remaster
The Diablo franchise is arguably Blizzard’s most beloved series, so it comes to no surprise that a Diablo 2 remaster may be in the works, according to a rather suggestive job listing over on the developer’s Careers page. The job listing in question is advertising a ‘Senior Software Engineer, Server’ position for the company’s Irvine, California studio. Previously, the game category the job was listed under was ‘Unannounced’, but recently the category has been switched over to ‘Classic Games’.
“Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft 3, and Diablo 2 the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experience by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation. We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done. If you like wearing many hats, know small teams are the most effective, and look forward to challenges that will create millions of new adventures for our players, we would love to hear from you.”
That bit about restoring the three mentioned games to glory certainly seems indicative of not only a Diablo 2 remaster, but one for Warcraft 3 as well. It should be noted that earlier this year, Blizzard announced that StarCraft: Remastered was in the works and that the company was “modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years of play and beyond.” If Blizzard puts a similar level of dedication into the alleged upcoming Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 remasters, it would make for some very nostalgia-happy fans.
More fuel for the speculative fire comes from the list of responsibilities further down within the job listing. As almost the entire list in one way or another suggests that it is for an upcoming remake – with the Diablo franchise even being mentioned by name – the list below remains in its entirety.
Responsibilities
- Implement server infrastructure changes to support new gameplay features.
- Improve architecture design to reduce operation cost
- Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play.
- Own implementation and curation of features new and old.
- Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.
- Implement, maintain, and own infrastructure for the Diablo franchise
