FOX’s X-Men VS Fantastic Four Movie Would Have Featured Deadpool and Daredevil
The cultural media landscape has seen many changes in the past decade, but one perhaps few saw coming was the juggernaut growth of the Marvel media presence. Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the biggest box office grab at the box office (when there was a US box office, obviously), and Marvel characters headline some of the biggest video games. The Marvel empire under Disney has only grown with the completion of the 20th Century FOX acquisition, with film rights for the X-Men and Fantastic Four going now to Disney. Now, it has been revealed that FOX at one point had plans for an X-Men VS Fantastic Four movie.
Frequent Bourne movie director Paul Greengrass recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about his long career in film. Greengrass was apparently asked by FOX to come in and discuss his potential work as director on what would be an ambitious crossover film utilizing the Marvel characters licensed to FOX. Apparently this film was the same one previously mentioned by Zack Stentz on an episode of Kevin Smith’s FatMan Beyond podcast. According to Stentz, the film would have entailed the following:
I can’t tell you what the plot was, but I can tell you that it used all of the characters, all of the Marvel characters that Fox had at the time in 2011. It used the X-Men. It used the Fantastic Four. It used Daredevil. It used Deadpool.”
According to Greengrass, he was only in the discussion phases of the project, as the X-Men VS Fantastic Four movie was ultimately scrapped before Greengrass could even sign on to be director. Recent sources claimed that the film would’ve been much like the Captain America: Civil War movie, with Professor X’s students squaring off against the Richards family after Johnny Storm causes a supernova in New York. It is interesting that Greengrass is allowed to talk about the characters involved with the project, but not the plot. Could Marvel be planning such a film for the MCU? Disney has confirmed a new Fantastic Four movie is in the works, but no plans for the X-Men have been made yet. If this project does end up taking some form now in the MCU, hopefully the same MCU quality ends up making up for the mistakes of previous X-Men and Fantastic Four movies. Flame On, Disney.
