Spider-Man: Miles Morales Is Only “Scratching The Surface” Of PS5 Power

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The next generation of video game consoles has finally kicked off with the release of the Xbox Series X, and today the industry stands on the eve of the PlayStation 5. One of the major exclusive games that Sony loyalists are looking forward to tomorrow is Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The reviews released so far for the game have praised its story and use of new PS5 features like the DualSense controller functionality. Considering its stance as the big new exclusive for the console, many have expected it to show off the device’s capabilities. Well, according to Insomniac Games, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is only “scratching the surface” of the PS5’s power.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Is Only "Scratching The Surface" Of PS5 Power

IGN recently released new statements given to them by Insomniac Games’s core technology director Mike Fitzgerald. Because of the PlayStation 5’s SSD, ray-tracing enabled fidelity mode and frame rate performance mode, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is able to operate at stunning speeds with alarming amounts of detail and effects. And yet, as Fitzgerald puts it:

It feels like we’re just scratching the surface of what you can do with hardware like [the PS5]. That we sort of can take a game model like Spider-Man and make everything really fast. Even the Ratchet and Clank game we’re working on is leaning into that, a lot.”

Fitzgerald believes that developers for the PS5 will have several years of “scraping more and more performance” out of the machine and its untapped potential. He also points out that the different performance modes in Spider-Man: Miles Morales allow for a greater number of audiences to be catered to in a way that Insomniac had not done with their previous games. It is true that the first games that accompany a console’s launch end up getting eclipsed by titles that come further down the device’s life cycle, but to see the minds behind such a stunning game express this right off the bat is quite a premonition of what’s to come. One might say their spider senses will be tingling for quite some time.
