Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Director Discusses Dark Souls, Castlevania Influences (VIDEO)

Respawn Entertainment’s big single-player Star Wars title Jedi: Fallen Order made it’s grand unveiling earlier this year, with an even deeper dive made available this past E3. The game’s debuting gameplay called more than a few comparisons to similar exploration and action-based titles such as Dark Souls and Castlevania, but it appears these seeming influences were all entirely intentional.

As revealed in a new blog entry on the EA website, Game Director Stig Asmussen shared extended insight on the development of Jedi: Fallen Order, divulging Respawn’s approach in crafting a fresh Star Wars experience. Combat is said to feature “considerable challenge and depth” with a similar mindset kept for its “non-linear” level design; qualities said to have “heavy influences” from standouts of the genre like Dark Souls, Castlevania, and Metroid.

I promise there is considerable challenge and depth to be found within our combat system. The same can be said about our approach to level design, which is crafted in a non-linear way with heavy influences from games like Metroid, Castlevania, and the Souls series.  The game will feature several planets that the player can elect to travel to via starship.  On these worlds unique abilities and upgrades can be found that open up new paths across other planets, making retraversal an essential part of the gameplay experience.”

The game’s director also touched on the game’s well-received E3 demo, sharing a few details in how it came to be. “This is by far the biggest E3 demo I have ever worked on,” Asmussen explained. “We spent months going back and forth discussing the best strategy to release this content, and ultimately decided for the first-look, it was critical to present a focused 15 minutes of raw, in-game footage highlighting lightsaber gameplay that speaks to the Jedi fantasy in an empowering way.”

As Asmussen admits “the full 25 minute experience is best to completely understand it,” an extended sequence of Jedi: Fallen Order was additionally shared on the blog, providing an all-new look at the game previously unseen by the public. The 25+ minute video depicts Jedi-in-training Cal Kestis as he and his companion droid BD-1 make their way through a legion of Imperial forces. This includes a few intense tussles with armed mercenaries, a giant spider fight, as well as a rampage involving the series’ familiar AT-AT walker. Check it out below.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order releases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 15th.
