The Last Of Us Part 2 Gameplay Leak Reveals Massive Spoilers

The Last of Us Part 2 Ellie

Fans have been waiting for Naughty Dog’s much-hyped sequel to The Last of Us for much longer than anticipated, with delay after delay pushing the game’s release further into the year as time has gone on. A game that was originally supposed to launch over two months ago has now dropped into release date limbo for the foreseeable future, with Sony removing the game from the PlayStation Store and issuing refunds to awaiting fans’ pre-orders. Suffice it to say (er, write), The Last of Us Part 2 hasn’t exactly had the smoothest road to release, a fact made even more evident by the emergence of a shocking new gameplay leak.

Revealed in a new post on Reddit, a collection of video files from the unreleased game has allegedly been revealed, showing off various bits of all-new gameplay as well as a few extended story-based cutscenes. The majority of this new footage is largely innocuous and feature inclusions players have grown to expect such as a prominent appearance from Joel, an eventual multiplayer component, as well as an (ahem) intimate scene or two. However, there are some particular scenes that may prove to be particularly spoilerific if this leak ends up being real. Massive spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 follow.

The big takeaway from the gameplay leak is that it strongly suggests Joel will meet his end sometime during The Last of Us Part 2. The first video, appropriately labeled “huge spoiler,” reveals a scene where Ellie finds Joel on the receiving end of an extremely brutal bandit attack, one that either protagonist seems ill-equipped to stop. While this scene doesn’t explicitly reveal Joel’s grim fate, a secondary scene from the leak pretty much confirms what fans may have feared. Called “Dina and Ellie cutscene,” the video depicts the two in a conversation that references characters that have died over the course of the game–one of which being confirmed as Joel.

It’s currently unknown where this leak may have originated, but it’d be difficult to cast much doubt on any of these videos being authentic. Even with poor resolution, these cutscenes seem completely in-line with footage players have seen as of late, with snippets of the supposed bandit attack previously seen during PlayStation’s State of Play event last September. Even with all this evidence and considering how long the game has been in development, there’s still the smallest of chances of these events being altered or cut in the final game. However, with much of this footage looking extremely polished, that may not be the likeliest of scenarios.
