DOOM Eternal: How ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ Influenced The Upcoming Sequel

DOOM Eternal

DOOM Eternal is set to arrive at some point in the future for multiple platforms, and fans are still drooling over the gory action that was revealed during QuakeCon 2018. That said, we recently learned why id Software chose the name for the sequel, as many were expecting to see DOOM 2 coming out. Turns out that part of the reason for the name actually has to do with a popular trilogy surrounding Batman.

During a recent interview, some members from the id Software team explained their reasoning behind the name of the upcoming sequel. While part of it was because it would end up being ‘DOOM 2: (release year)’, they also mentioned how Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ carried a bit of weight in the creative process.

“I think [Christopher] Nolan did it the best, and we thought about that,” creative director Hugo Martin said. “It wasn’t ‘Dark Knight 1, Dark Knight 2, Dark Knight 3.’ Each one had its own name, but there was an arc there. They were all connected, as is this game as a sequel to [Doom] 2016.”

“[Doom Eternal] felt like a good way to go in that regard,” Martin continued. “You’re not limiting yourself, and you’re also not creating confusion with the brand.” Speaking of brand, that glorious gameplay that was revealed a few days ago showed that they are definitely upping the ante and staying on course for more destruction and chaos than ever. Either way, the upcoming sequel is going to be intense.

DOOM Eternal has no release date as of now, but it will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One. You can read more about the reasoning behind the name right here.
