As Hollywood films and television series resume their major production schedules, video game adaptations are among the biggest in the works. The Last of Us live-action series for HBO is set to begin filming later this year, and an animated Super Mario Bros. movie is being crafted as well. 2019 saw the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action film become the highest-grossing video game movie ever, leaving hype for an eventual new film. This hype is especially being held by fans, as both Tails the Fox and Knuckles the Echidna are promised to be introduced in the new adventure. However, a new leak of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 plot indicates new details about Knuckles in the sequel.

Online sleuths first discovered the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 plot leak on Paramount’s copyright submission for the film to the United States copyright office. The synopsis provides a general framework for the plot, including the suggestion that James Marsden’s Tom and Tika Sumpter’s Maddie may have a reduced role in the sequel, with their characters going on vacation. What fans have found interesting is the suggestion that Knuckles will be an antagonist to some extent in this film. The full synopsis reads:

“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.”

Another interesting detail in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 plot synopsis is the mention of an emerald, which may be the Master Emerald or one of the Chaos Emeralds from the Sonic games. As of writing, the voice actors for both Tails and Knuckles have yet to be confirmed, though Colleen O’Shaughnessey voiced Tails’ cameo in the first film, and Jason Momoa has reportedly been sought for the Knuckles role. Hopefully, a trailer is released soon that reveals these casting choices, though given how the first trailer for the original film went, it’s understandable that Paramount would want to carefully take their time.
