Scott Pilgrim Anime Series In The Works At Netflix
Anime has been slowly becoming more ingrained and accepted into popular American culture, and that has especially been true now thanks to streaming services. Netflix has especially bet big on catering to anime fans, through adapting anime series’ like Cowboy Bebop into live-action and making original anime series of their own, like their Castlevania anime. In the past few years, Netflix also helped revive passions for the Scott Pilgrim film adaptation by hosting it on their service. So, it makes so much sense now to hear that Netflix has greenlit a brand new Scott Pilgrim anime series.

The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news coming from Netflix and UCP, Universal Studio’s television division. The two companies already collaborated to bring The Umbrella Academy graphic novel series to live-action, and now they are reuniting to develop a new Scott Pilgrim anime series. Bryan Lee O’Malley, who created the original Scott Pilgrim manga, will write and executive produce the new series. BenDavid Grabinski, who previously served as showrunner of Are You Afraid of the Dark? at Nickelodeon, will lead this new anime series alongside O’Malley. The live-action movie will also have some remaining connections, as the film’s director Edgar Wright and producer Nira Park will also executive produce the new series.
Adapting the Scott Pilgrim franchise to an anime is a smart idea, as the original graphic novels wore O’Malley’s influences from manga and anime quite heavily on their sleeves. The characters depicted on the page were even used for the Scott Pilgrim video game and some animated clips to help promote the 2010 live-action film. Even if the new anime strays somewhat from the graphic novel’s art style, it is great to see that Scott’s story will still live on in a new medium and for a whole new generation. Hello again, friend of a friend.
