Overwatch’s Genji is Getting a Buff to His Dragonblade Ultimate

Genji's Dragonblade ultimate buff

Despite already being considered one of the game’s most powerful heroes, Overwatch’s resident cyborg ninja is receiving a buff soon. The buff, which is set to arrive in a currently ‘to be determined’ update to the game, is geared towards Genji‘s Dragonblade ultimate. According to Overwatch principal designer Geoff Goodman, the Dragonblade buff will be increasing the number of sword swings allotted to the hero during the ability’s use.

Though the upcoming skill boost can potentially be as polarizing as people’s opinions on Genji can be, it is apparently being implemented for a good reason. According to Goodman, a recent update to the game has made it so that a player’s latency is adversely affecting the Genji’s available sword swings during his ultimate. Apparently, the higher the player’s latency, the more swings the player could utilize.

Before the last major patch, the amount of sword swings you could get changed depending on your latency. Strangely, if you had higher latency you could swing more often. This bug was fixed, which caused some players to suddenly get less swings than they were used to.”

Since the latest major patch, players with high latency were able to swing Genji’s katana seven times before the end of Dragonblade, while everyone else only had a limit of six swings. The bug fix that brought the limit down to six swings, while evening out the playing field, caused some disappointment among Genji players.

With that in mind we’re going to increase his swing speed overall so he’ll gain that 7th swing back for all players, regardless of latency. I’m not entirely sure when we can get that update into the players hands, but we’ll make sure its in the patch notes when it hits.”

With the promised Dragonblade buff coming at a later date, it is understandable if the Overwatch players reading this are preparing to break out their favorite Genji counters to help combat the inevitable power spike the cyborg ninja is sure to enjoy. That said, the Overwatch team at Blizzard has proven so far that they are always watching. So, if Genji’s power levels step out of line, chances are he’ll get hit with a nerf that will help keep him playable, but not overpowered.

So, what are your thoughts on the upcoming buff to Genji’s Dragonblade ultimate? Do you think the cyborg Shimada brother deserves it?
