Overwatch Custom Game XP Exploit Leads Game Director to Threaten to Remove the Feature

Overwatch Custom Game

It’s been almost a full year since the release of Overwatch and the game is still having more characters and features added to it. We just recently saw the reveal of the latest playable character, Orisa, as well as the rollout of the new Custom Game mode. The mode, dubbed the Game Browser by Blizzard, was meant to give players control over certain mechanics and which characters could be playable, but has caused a bit of a stir within Blizzard. Because the game allows for custom time settings in a match, many players are changing it to limitless, which has led to an unlimited Overwatch Custom Game experience point exploit.

A new blog post by Jeff Kaplan, director of Overwatch, on the game’s official forums has expressed his discontent with the use of this exploit among fans. Kaplan acknowledged that he and the development team were aware that this exploit would be present, but hoped that the measures implemented to discourage use of the exploit in the game would have proven more successful.

The Custom Game mode has an option for no-time-limit matches, which would enable experience points to be gained while inactive. This, of course, goes against the team’s plans for a more active style of gameplay. With this now being prevalent, Kaplan is begging for players to not engage with this exploit and to report those who do. This will help in maintaining the game’s integrity and not having to remove custom mode experience gains. He said:

At this point, I am making a plea to you – the Overwatch Community at large: please decide what you want to happen here and be a part of the solution. If you enjoy Custom Games awarding experience then please help us combat the behavior we’re seeing now. Do not create Custom Games with the intent of gaining experience while inactive. Don’t join those games. Don’t jokingly put those names in your own Custom Games. And report players who are abusing the system.”

Kaplan does reference that Skirmish matches have removed experience point gains, but he does not mention what on Blizzard’s part will be done to further discourage this exploit in the future.
