Overwatch Cross-Play Announced For All Platforms (VIDEO)

Online multiplayer games continue to dominate as some of the most popular and most lucrative titles in the industry, with one of the top ones being Blizzard’s Overwatch. The hit team-based multiplayer shooter game continues its successful streak, even as development on Overwatch 2 continues. One popular feature that many online multiplayer games see demanded by their player bases is cross-play, so that players from different PC and console platforms can play matches with their friends. This has been implemented for games like Rocket League and Apex Legends, and now at long last it appears that Overwatch cross-play is finally coming.

As reported by Game Informer, Blizzard made the Overwatch cross-play announcement with a new developer update video on their official PlayOverwatch YouTube channel. The feature will first be available as an open beta through a new Battle.net update for PC and console players. There will be some caveats though, as individual console players will be limited to only playing with other console players. They will be allowed to play with other PC players, IF they have PC-using friends in their party though. PC players will not be able to deactivate cross-play, but console players can turn it off to only play with other players on their specific platform.

Competitive mode also has some limitations, as parties containing both PC and console players will not be allowed. Exclusive matchmaking pools will instead be utilized for each player base. The new Battle.Net update also merges friend lists from different territories. Users will need to have a Battle.Net account to access this update containing the Overwatch cross-play beta. While a set start date for the beta has not been disclosed yet, the promise of Overwatch cross-play at long last will feel like the biggest payload for longtime Overwatch players.
