New PlayStation 5 Leaked Design Is Painfully Fake

PlayStation 5 Games Event PS5

With the big reveal of Microsoft’s next console, the Xbox Series X, fans are likely all aboard the hype train as it chugs along into the next-generation station. However, with great hype, also comes great responsibility–a trait one must exercise when too-good-to-be-true information is so easily made shareable. It appears not everyone has heeded this timeless advice, as a new “leaked” PlayStation 5 design has gone viral, even though it looks just a bit too fake to be real.

By the looks of the newly-surfaced Japanese ad, the mysterious look of the PlayStation 5 has seemingly been revealed–or at least, that’s the intended idea. Discovered on ResetEra (via Prima Games), the console’s so-called “final design” sports a very sleek look and provides a peek at the system’s supposed new controller. Upon closer inspection, there’s also a launch date set for December 4th, 2020, keeping in line with the console’s currently-slated Holiday 2020 release.

One thing the image has going for it is that it’s passably edited, somewhat contributing to any potential believability factor. However, a few noticeable details were noted that threaten to remove all credibility from this leak. Firstly, the picture’s depicted controller looks suspiciously like the Nacon Revolution Pro Controller for PS4, the device matching all the way down to the peripheral’s unique D-pad. There’s also an issue with the console’s “PS5” logo, which appears to be an unnatural addition to the image. These drawbacks paired with Sony’s usual penchant for calculated showcases (which this is not) and it becomes very certain that this is all just a hoax.

Of course, stranger console designs have happened before, so there’s always a microscopic atom-sized sliver of a chance that this image might possibly be the real deal. With that said, it would be extremely surprising for Sony’s carefully-laid console plans to be derailed by a randomly leaked image. Having reached out to Sony for comment, a source with Prima Games is said to have “laughed hysterically at the design,” a likely telling revelation of this rumor’s longevity.

What do you think? Do you think this leak is onto something design-wise, or do you feel Sony will take a bolder approach with its new console’s look? Will it end up looking like one of those leaked dev kits?
