It has been ten long years since we last saw the two characters that formed the beating heart of the original three Pirates of the Caribbean movies on screen.  With their noticeable absence in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it appeared that the story of married couple Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan was over.  Now, with the release of a new trailer for Pirates Of The Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales, it’s official – Will Turner is back!

Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, can be seen in the last part of the trailer above.  When we last saw him, Will had taken up the mantle of the Captain of The Flying Dutchman, a role he inherited through some quick thinking by Jack Sparrow at the end of Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End.  Captaining The Flying Dutchman means that while Will Turner can never die, he is also bound to the sea, only able to set foot on land once every ten years.  His task is to ferry the dead to the other side, a task that his predecessor, Davy Jones, had abandoned. Based on how he looks in the trailer, it appears that he’s been at his task for some time now, as bits of the sea can be seen on his face.

There is some speculation as to why Orlando Bloom’s character has returned to the franchise.  The signs seem to lead to the series’ newest protagonist,  Henry, played by Brenton Thwaites.  We know that Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan have a son, who we see in a post-credits scene at the end of Pirates 3: At World’s End.  It is very possible that Henry is Will’s son, all grown up and a sailor in the Royal Navy.  Plus, according to the actor himself, he is trying to “break a curse” that is preventing him from reconnecting with his father.  It doesn’t take a spyglass to put two and two together.

Orlando Bloom can be seen alongside other series regulars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally and Stephen Graham when the movie sets sail on May 26, 2017.
