Learn High Valyrian With an Online Course Created by Game of Thrones Linguist

High Valyrian

There are a vast multitude of languages spoken within the world of Game of Thrones. However, usage of those languages in the show proved to be quite a challenge as George R. R. Martin never fully developed the languages used in the books, unlike J.R.R Tolkien who did just that for his stories of Middle Earth. Linguist David J. Peterson was hired to complete the languages used in the A Song of Fire and Ice novels. Because of this fans, can now learn High Valyrian for themselves with the help of Duolingo.

Peterson has reportedly been working on creating a course for High Valyrian with the language learning app since last year. The linguist has created languages for multiple shows including Defiance and The 100. While Peterson has also taught a course concerning the Game of Thrones languages at the University of California earlier this year, the upcoming High Valyrian course will be the first time that the language will be available to learn worldwide.

Duolingo offers free courses for many different languages, however it is possible to purchase a subscription which removes ads. There are also numerous resources online which can help users fully study High Vaylrian from verb conjugation, phonology, gender forms, and more. While this is the first Game of Thrones language to come to Duolingo, it may not be the last fictional adaptation. The app has been incorporating many constructed languages such as Esperanto and is even testing for Kilngon from Star Trek. It’s only a matter of time before more constructed languages make themselves available.
