Half-Life: Alyx Is Part Of A Larger Story, Says Valve – “Not The End”

Half-Life: Alyx

2020 is promising many high-demand video games that will see the return of beloved sequels, and surprisingly to some fans, one of these games will be exclusive to VR. Many fans lost hope that Valve would ever return to the world of Half-Life and even fewer could’ve guessed that such a reprisal would involve virtual reality, but Valve managed to fit both categories into the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx. While it is not quite the full Half-Life 3 that fans have been thirsting for, many have wondered if this new game might keep those aspirations alive. Well, according to Valve, it seems that this story is “not the end.”

Game Informer recently shared an interview they conducted with Valve developer Robin Walker about Half-Life: Alyx. On the topic of the game’s narrative, Walker suggested that playing Half-Life 2 would not be a bad idea for gamers to understand the context of Alyx, as the VR title is a “critical part of the larger story” and does plenty to “push that story forward” for all games in the series. When asked whether or not Alyx could lead in some way to a potential Half-Life 3, Walker had this to say:

Half-Life means a lot to us, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to refamiliarize ourselves with its characters, setting, and mechanics. There are Half-Life: Alyx team members who have been at Valve since Half-Life 2, and quite a few who go back to the original Half-Life. There are also people on the team for whom Half-Life: Alyx is their first time working on this series at all – and many of them certainly hope it’s not the last. We absolutely see Half-Life: Alyx as our return to this world, not the end of it.”

Walker doesn’t explicitly confirm that a Half-Life 3 is in the works, but this would certainly indicate that another Half-Life game could be coming. One thing that’s for sure is that it would upset many fans if a third core entry never actually comes to fruition. Whatever this game ends up being, for now, fans will thankfully soon use their crowbars to open up the crate containing Half-Life: Alyx in it very soon.
