RUMOR: Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn Meeting With Disney About Re-Hiring

James Gunn Rumor Guardians Of The Galaxy Director Meeting With Disney

Earlier this month, Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn was fired from Marvel Studios and Disney following discovery of offensive posts on Twitter. The notorious tweets were dated from ten years prior, containing jokes about content many would see as uncomfortable at best, and horrifying at worst. A considerable public groundswell has appeared in the wake of Disney’s decision, with many either agreeing with the shocking severance, or arguing Gunn’s positively-changed nature.

Support for re-hiring Gunn saw a significant following develop in a 350,000-strong petition, as well as from the titular Guardians of the Galaxy actors themselves voicing commitment to their friend in an open letter. According to sources with Variety, this endorsement of Gunn’s character may have been a wake-up call to decision-makers at Disney, as it’s now believed they may be willing to reconsider his position at Marvel.

As Variety explains, there’s been “a growing feeling that Gunn could be reinstated,” as “Marvel and Disney have been unusually radio-silent” about the search for a replacement director for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. It’s suggested the delay of a decision is attributed to Walt Disney chairman Bob Iger with Disney currently awaiting his return from vacation.

Further insider input echoes Disney’s reportedly reconsidered feelings, as The DisInsider editor-in-chief Skyler Shuler revealed in a post on Twitter. Shuler’s words also express belief that Gunn could potentially be re-hired, but maintains the Disney Company is opting to take its time in making the eventual call.

Having been an integral part of Marvel’s previous two Guardians of the Galaxy films, the removal of James Gunn from the franchise’s third installment puts Disney in a real bind in finding a suitable replacement. Pressure to be ready before the early 2019 production date paired with increasing online fervor for Gunn’s return are likely to have contributed to the possible reconciliation between the parties. Only time will tell if Disney ends up exercising forgiveness or reaffirming their original condemnation.

What do you think? Are you hoping Disney will give James Gunn a second chance, or are you too disturbed by his offensive tweets to ever consider forgiveness?
