‘Ghost Story Games’ Rises From the Ashes of ‘Irrational Games’
After nineteen years, a brilliant developer has met its end! Irrational Games has created the likes of Freedom Force, Tribes: Vengeance, SWAT 4, and most notably, the incredibly intriguing Bioshock series. From its ashes a new developer has come to haunt its older self. This new development comes under the name of Ghost Story Games.
In 1997, three former employees of Looking Glass Studios started up a new team of their own. Ken Levine, Jonathan Chey, and Robert Fermier created Irrational Games. Over time and many failed attempts including cancelled movie, they’ve acquired a very strong set of releases. The biggest of these being the Bioshock series, known for its unique storytelling, brilliant atmospheres, and solid gameplay.
As all good things come to an end so to has Irrational Games. They had quite the run and now they’ve begun to move on to bigger and better things. After the completion of Bioshock Infinite and its two part expansion the studio let go of many of its employees. Interestingly enough, they didn’t just let those employees go. They helped them find new jobs which garners a lot respect. It would seem that the trimming of the team was all in order to shift direction creatively. Moving back into that small highly skilled and capable kind of team. In fact, Ken Levine stated:
I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience”. With a total of 25 employees they intend to once again make beautiful and well crafted story driven games.
In addition to being a newly re-branded studio, the team already has a project which they’re working on. Sadly, there’s no telling what that actually is. It would seem that there were rumors of a “first person sci- fi game” but those were formed more so before the founding of Ghost Story Games. Coincidentally, other former Bioshock developers are working on a game with horror aspects called Perception (full story here), ironic isn’t it? At the very least, fans can hope to expect the same quality and unique story telling that they’ve come to expect from such talented folk.
