More Focus Could be Put on Stories of Overwatch’s Symmetra and Pharah Soon
With just a few days left until the anniversary extravaganza for Overwatch, the game’s first year is drawing to a close. The event is sure to bring a plethora of goodies for players to obtain. With that being said, it’s never too late to begin thinking about what kind of greatness the title’s second year could possibly offer. Blizzard has had a hit on their hands with the FPS, and there certainly aren’t any signs of slowing down in the foreseeable future. There are surely going to be more events, skins, emotes, stories, and more becoming available in the next year, but it may be time to explore the arcs of other characters. You know, like Symmetra and Pharah.
In a recent interview, game director Jeff Kaplan his worry for the aforementioned characters, saying that stories about them could be coming in the neat future. “I worry about characters like Symmetra,” Kaplan said. “I think we could do a lot more with her, and we have a pretty cool arc we’d like to see her go through.” Without having even received a Legendary skin from events in the past, there is no doubt that the support character has been a little shortchanged in terms of in-game and general Overwatch lore.
Pharah, on the other hand, has received a bit more than Symmetra in the past, but it still doesn’t come close to the attention given to heroes like Tracer and Winston. After support sniper Ana was introduced and it became known that she is Pharah’s mother, not much else has arrived for the justice dispensing character. However, fans needn’t worry because Kaplan mention more is in the works for this hero:
Pharah is pretty underrepresented too, but we have huge plans for her, so I’m not worried about her.”
If Jeff isn’t going to worry, we shouldn’t either. After all, he is the game director. Maybe fans will receive a bit more on these characters during the anniversary event, but that might be a little unlikely with it just around the corner. Either way, Overwatch‘s second year is sure to bring players more of everything. Even the “two dingbats,” Junkrat and Roadhog. “We’re telling this big story about Reyes and Morrison that’s serious, but then, by the way, here’s a guy who blew his leg off and thinks it’s the funniest thing ever. The way I describe them is they’re almost our spinoff IP. I always say ‘Joanie Loves Chachi,” and everyone’s like ‘No! That’s so bad! Not like Joanie loves Chachi!'”
What say you, heroes? Would you like to see more on Pharah and Symmetra? Does the thought of a Junkrat/Roadhog spinoff tickle your fancy, or would that be a terrible idea?
