Borderlands 3 Crossplay Support Is Coming, Just Not To PlayStation

Borderlands 3 Typhon DeLeon

As we settle into the new generation of gaming hardware, one particular feature is becoming more and more requested by players. Crossplay helps push gaming forward in that it brings gamers together, regardless of platform. That said, it would appear that the highly requested feature is coming to Borderlands 3, but not on one particular platform: PlayStation.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford recently took to Twitter to offer the good news of crossplay with fans of Borderlands 3. “An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms,” Pitchford said. That, of course, was the good news. The bad news, according to Pitchford: “For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.”

So, what does this mean? Well, for starters, Borderlands 3 won’t be getting crossplay support on PlayStation consoles for the time being. Also, while we don’t know specifics, it could be assumed that the reason 2K told Gearbox to remove support for crossplay was due to what was revealed during the recent Epic v. Apple trial: Sony charges additional fees to enable crossplay on PlayStation. Did Sony want more money and 2K wasn’t willing to pay? We will just have to wait and see if more details come to light.

In the meantime, Borderlands 3 is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Xbox One, and new-gen consoles, with crossplay coming to most of them in the near future.
