Fallout New California Now Live After 7 Years In The Making
Unofficial Fallout projects are massive, spanning across almost every game in the franchise and bringing new stories to the irradiated wastelands. After a long 7 years in development, Radian-Helix Media has finally released Fallout: New California as as mod for PC. Now fans can enjoy a completely new story all for free!
The mod going live is of course a major milestone for Radian-Helix media and the group couldn’t be more excited. According the the modder’s latest blog post, the team will be relying on the open beta players to help improve New California even further, stating that while “BETA 200” won’t be perfect, it won’t be anything a few patches won’t fix.
It is very exciting times around here. FNC has been testing since last May with a small group. This week we’ve been testing with a larger group. Basically just finding any last minute things we can polish off to take some rough spots out of the otherwise glassy finish on the mod. BETA 200 won’t be perfect, but it’ll be damn close. We’re still relying on open beta to have the community join us in making patches and reporting issues. Still worth downloading and playing day 1, but if you want to check back in after a month or two, our final 1.0 version will go live December 14th-15th.”
Fallout: New California is a mod for Fallout: New Vegas and is only available of PC. Players can find the mod on both Moddb and Nexus Mods, with both giving detailed instructions on how to install as well as important information needed to make sure it runs properly. In order to play the mod at all it will be necessary to own download Fallout: New Vegas, though players will be given a choice to play through the vanilla game or the New California mod in the game’s start up menu.
Fallout New California doesn’t play like a DLC for New Vegas but rather an entirely new game with a new environment, new characters, and new story. In fact, the mod doesn’t even touch on New Vegas until the very end. Players will be able to travel to New Vegas after the mod’s end credits however they won’t be able to go back in time as the Courier to play as the Star Player.
The Star Player will have the chance to choose between two different paths in a opening sequence where they’re given the option between tackling or dodging. This will set them on either the Path of the Warrior or the Path of the Scientist and will set the tone for their narrative moving forward.
Tackle starts you on the Path of the Warrior and reshapes your story in Vault 18. Who you are, what people think of you, and how you behave are all up to you after that. You open up the option to join Vault Security or Maintenance in this path.
If you Dodge, you start the Path of the Scientist. You wake up injured with a busted leg and limp through the prequel, helping your robotics teacher repair the Vault’s computer network and discovering another side to the story not seen in the other path.”
