Disney Leaves Star Wars Game Publishing Rights To Licensees
Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm has been interesting to witness over the past decade, as it has meant something of a new stage for the Star Wars franchise. The new Star Wars films have been record-breaking smash hits with audiences worldwide, and the ancillary franchise entries such as the TV shows and comics have made successful corners of the Star Wars galaxy in their own right.
However, the video game side, while financially successful in certain aspects, has not been as fruitful according to some fans, especially given the recent cancellation of a Star Wars project by EA. Still, it seems that even with this recent development, Disney still plans on deferring Star Wars game publishing to its licensees.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, The Walt Disney Company recently held its quarterly earnings call for investors. On the call, Disney CEO Bob Iger made what is believed to be a rare acknowledgement of weakness in the company’s performance, particularly in the area of self-publishing video games. Iger confessed that Disney is not particularly great at publishing games related to their intellectual properties, as he states:
We’ve just decided that the best place for us to be in that space is licensing and not publishing. We have good relationships with some of those that we’re licensing to, notably EA.”
It seems that despite the controversies surrounding EA’s two Battlefront games, Disney is still nonetheless content with maintaining their exclusive licensing deal with EA and letting the publisher handle the majority of the work related to making and selling Star Wars games. It should be noted that EA also publishes many mobile Star Wars games that rake in plenty of revenue from microtransactions. It seems that EA will remain the primary source of Star Wars games for the foreseeable future. As for what forms these games will take on console and other platforms, impossible to see, the future is.
