Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Dev Team is All New, Confirms Respawn

Star Wars Jedi

Respawn Entertainment recently came out with a delightful new surprise in the form of Apex Legends, a free-to-play battle royale title set in the Titanfall universe, though this isn’t the only thing the developers have cooking for 2019. With the recent release of Apex and the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Respawn seems to have quite a bit on their plate. Rather than reallocate resources and personnel from the Titanfall team to work on the upcoming Star Wars title, it seems the developers have chosen to bring on a fresh team instead.

Apex Legends’ design director Mackey McCandlish recently spoke in an interview about just how the company was segmented now that the studio is working on multiple projects at the same time. McCandish explained that the Titanfall team moved on to Apex Legends, leaving room for an almost entirely new team to come in for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. To make this collaboration work, Respawn brought Stig Asmussen on board as game director for the title and from there he was able to fill out his own team for the upcoming Star Wars project.

The way we approach development is a game director-first approach. Vince Zampella gets Stig Asmussen in, he’s made God of War, he starts hiring loads of people for the team. The team tries different ideas, the team finds what resonates, a Star Wars opportunity appears, we can make that, that team continues to build up, get space, allocate, they start making that game, and they deliver that game ultimately.”

McCandlish also mentioned that because some individuals from either team may sometimes be better suited on a different project, there was some constant shuffling of personnel. For the most part, however, both the Titanfall and the Star Wars Jedi teams are “extremely independent,” only meeting with each other once every other week for an all-hands meeting.

Apex Legends is currently free-to-play for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The upcoming Star Wars title from Respawn is thought be arriving during the Holiday season for the same platforms.
