Capcom Laid Off Several Dead Rising Studio Staff, Cuts Scope On The Next Game

Capcom laid off

Capcom Vancouver is making huge changes to the company recently and an inside source has revealed just what those changes entail. The company has been working tirelessly on the next Dead Rising, along with another intellectual property in the pre-stages of development. According to the inside source, Capcom laid off staff, canceled the new IP, and is cutting the scope of the Dead Rising studio down.

The source reported to Kotaku and chose to remain anonymous to protect their career, and said Capcom laid off 50 of their roughly 250 staff. They go on to say that this is part of a company plan to “reorganize” their company structure and streamline their procedures. Furthermore, the company is also trying to reign in the next Dead Rising with claims that it is under-staffed and too widely scoped.

Aside from the fact that Capcom laid off some of their staff, the source also noted that the new IP was an early prototype that had yet to be greenlit. What was envisioned as an action-adventure game in the third person, players would enter an alternate reality set in New York City. It is unclear whether or not Capcom will pursue this game at a later date.

While Capcom laid off staff and cut out projects, it is still unclear just what they mean by reorganizing and streamlining their company. Capcom Vancouver’s  work on mobile games like Puzzle Fighter brings into question whether or not the company will also dial back their work on other unannounced projects in the mobile arena as well. Unfortunately for fans and employees alike, we’ll all have to wait and see what happens next.

While Capcom isn’t the first company to make this move, is it a “smart” one for them to cut staff that could help propel their slower moving titles to completion? Join in on the conversation in the comment section below!
