Xbox Series X/S Supply Issues Expected Through June

Throughout the COVID-19 quarantine, gamers have found themselves witnessing a strange side effect involving gaming consoles themselves. The Nintendo Switch saw a shortage of hardware throughout 2020, and now due to a shortage of components needed to craft the devices, the low supply appears unable to keep up with consumer demand. The Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 both launched towards the tail end of last year and have also seen a significant increase in demand as time has gone on, enough so that they too are seeing supply issues. Well into 2021, Microsoft has claimed that they expect the issues to last at least another couple of months.

A recent earnings call saw Microsoft chief financial officer Amy Hood detailing various facets of growth the company is expected to see over the course of the 4th quarter, which ends on June 30th. She explained the company expects to see a decline in revenue compared to last year, stating, “Significant demand for the Xbox Series X and S will continue to be constrained by supply.” This comes after a previous statement made in December by Xbox CFO Tim Stuart, who claimed supply could be constrained as far as June. Though, outlooks seemed a bit more optimistic at the time.

“We’ll have supply cranking over the next, what, 4, 5, 6 months. And that’s when I expect to see really that demand profile start to be met, which will be really, really great.”

As shortages are prevalent enough to affect even those outside the Xbox platform, it would appear that patience is going to be the key going forward for manufacturers and consumers alike. In time, surely demand will balance itself out with supply, but for now, there appears to be no stopping the insane increase in gaming for players around the world.
