Warner Bros. Game Studios Could Be Acquired By Sony Or Xbox
Across all entertainment media in the past few years, corporate mergers and acquisitions are a fairly significant and frequently occurring phenomenon. This has been especially true in the gaming industry as of late, with notable recent occurrences of this being Microsoft’s pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard and Sony’s acquisition of Bungie. Outside of the gaming industry, the biggest media merger/split of focus lately is undoubtedly WarnerMedia, as the media empire changes hands from AT&T to Discovery Inc. While mostly concerning television and film properties, video games are also involved as well and as such, could mean that Warner Bros. game studios may be sold off.
Couldn’t get enough confirmation to actually write a post about it, but hearing a decent bit of chatter this week about WB Discovery shopping their game development studios around.

FanByte Media news editor Imran Khan recently shared some tweets related to the WarnerMedia merger with Discovery Inc. on their official Twitter account. Particular attention points toward how Warner Bros. game studios could potentially be affected by the merger. Across several posts, Khan suggested they have interacted with sources close to Warner Bros. in the know about the pending ramifications. According to these sources, the newly-merged Warner Bros. Discovery corporation would likely consider selling their game dev studios to another company.
Interested parties include EA, Take-Two, Microsoft, Sony, Tencent, Netease, and PUBG Corp. WBD wants to sell studios and license IP, supposedly.

Interestingly, some of the game studios this decision would potentially involve include Suicide Squad game studio Rocksteady, LEGO game developer TT Games, and WB Games studios in Boston, Albany, and Montreal. According to Khan, a few interested parties are already interested in scooping up these Warner Bros. game studios, and potentially include Microsoft, Sony, EA, Take-Two, and Tencent, to name a few. Warner is also considering selling their licenses to specific IP along with these studios, should the buyers be interested.
Considering the large array of franchises under the Warner Bros. game umbrella – such as Mortal Kombat, the Batman Arkham games, and the Harry Potter-focused Hogwarts Legacy – it would be interesting to see who might buy what. One thing that’s for sure is the pending Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard has triggered an acquisition war between them, Sony, and other industry titans. Whatever ends up happening, it is good to know at least that these talented studios won’t be dissolved and that their work will continue.
