The PS4 Will Be Supported for At Least 3 More Years

We’ve some good news for those planning to stick with their PS4 instead of making the sizable upgrade to the PS5. While it’s typically a crapshoot determining how long Sony plans to support its ‘second to newest’ console, it’s recently been revealed that Sony expects the transition period between the PS4 and the PS5 to last roughly three years.

This news comes by way of the folks over at IGN, which reported on a recent conversation between AV Watch and Sony’s SVP of Global Product Strategy and Management, Hideaki Nishino. According to Nishino, “forward compatibility is important” between the PS4 and the PS5, and as such we will be seeing plenty of cross-generational content for the two consoles for at least a few more yes. “The current assumption is that the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take about three years,” Nishino said.

We have more than 100 million PS4 customers, but we will do our best to move to PS5 as soon as possible.”

This is of course excellent news for PS4 holdouts, even those that are simply waiting to see if Sony comes out with a half-generational console that could serve as the PS5’s PS4 Pro. Either way, this means that gamers playing on the PS4 will have plenty to keep themselves occupied with for the next few years, even if the PS5’s lineup of exclusive titles will only grow better over time.

The PS5 is slated to release on November 12, 2020.
