The PS5 Will Output Up To 8K Resolutions Following A Future Update

PS5 Won't Support Expandable SSD Storage At Launch

The folks over at Sony have some future-proofing planned for the PS5. Releasing in just a few short days, it’s been revealed that the PS5 will be capable of outputting 8K resolutions following a system software update planned for sometime in the future.

This news comes by way of the folks over at IGN, which reported on an extensive PS5 ‘ultimate FAQ’ released today by Sony. In the FAQ it is revealed that the console’s supported resolutions are 729p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p. More interestingly, it’s also revealed that the PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and the console will be able to output 8K resolutions following a future system software update.

The PS5 Can Output 8K Resolutions Following A Future Update

It’s currently unknown as to whether the PS5 will support native 8K or if Sony is going the checkerboarding route like what was done on the PS4 Pro. Also interesting is the fact that the company is going out of its way to promote future support for 8K resolution output, meanwhile the comments section at the bottom of the FAQ is filled with users wondering if Sony will patch in support for 1440p resolution. If there’s enough of a desire for it then it’s certainly possible Sony will patch it in, it’s just an interesting feature that’s oddly absent from the PS5 at launch.

The PS5 is slated to release on November 12, 2020, though launch day sales will be online-only.
