Sonic The Hedgehog Cereal Lets You Eat Your Rings

Major video game franchises have long been prime for merchandising, and this has especially been true for the historic cases of a video game franchise being adapted to film. This seems to be especially true for the new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, after the first film saw success at the box office in 2020. The new film has already made plush toys, fuzzy Sonic Xbox controllers and a new Kid Cudi song available to promote it. Breakfast cereals have often been a common promotional tie-in for video game franchises, and now there’s a new Sonic the Hedgehog cereal that lets fans eat gold rings for breakfast.

General Mills has shared a press release to various sites like Game Informer about their new Sonic the Hedgehog cereal. The new breakfast cereal mainly consists of sweetened honey-flavored rings akin to the infamous golden rings from the Sonic video games. Also present are marshmallows shaped like the green chaos emerald and Sonic in his blue blur speedy form. As for the nature of the partnership with General Mills, here is what Sega of America’s Michael Cisneros, Senior Manager of Licensing had to say:

General Mills is one of the foremost brands in the food industry — especially when it comes to youth-focused products, so we’re thrilled to partner up with them. This partnership is a really fun and creative way to integrate some iconic aspects of the Sonic games into a whole new product line, and we’re excited to introduce it to Sonic fans.”

General Mills has also confirmed that they are making a new type of Sonic the Hedgehog-themed fruit snack, though details about that have not yet been revealed. However, both the fruit snacks and the Sonic the Hedgehog cereal are being referred to as “Special Editions”, so they will only be available for a limited time. These special cereals tend to be found at local major grocery store chains, so fans have gotta go fast to their local supermarket to catch these. Too bad General Mills isn’t in the chili dog business.
