PS5’s Lack Of Web Browser Addressed By Sony
Overall the PS5 has had a decent start out of the gate, selling out in most places and being chiefly relegated to online-only availability on launch day. While reception for Sony’s next-gen console has been mostly positive, many have taken issue with some notably absent features, including the lack of expandable SSD storage and the absence of built-in web browser. While the former is coming in a later update, Sony has issued a statement explaining why a web browser likely won’t be implemented further down the line.
In a recent interview with Sony’s Senior VP of Platform Planning & Management, Hideaki Nishino, the VP explained that Sony currently has no plans to implement a web browser into the PS5. “Currently, we do not intend to install a web browser on PS,” Nishino said. “Of course, I use it as a component to use various network functions, but I have doubts about whether a web browser is required for game consoles as an application.”
Nishino on the lack of a web browser on PS5:

A web browser for the PS5 doesn’t seem completely out of the question, though, with Nishino later adding that “Since it is necessary to take measures against child switches, it will take some man-hours to install a web browser.” Sony put a web browser in both the PS3 and the PS4, so it would make at least a little sense for the PS5 to get one at some point. In the meantime, some thrifty PS5 users are working around the lack of a built-in web browser by accessing the web via links on Twitter, of all things.
