PlayStation Reportedly Felt "Blindsided" Over Microsoft Partnership

Last week, a momentous announcement was made that could change the gaming landscape as we know it, with gaming rivals Sony and Microsoft announcing a “strategic partnership” that would see the two companies working hand in hand to share technology and advance the development of both semiconductors and AI. While this partnership has the potential to break down the long standing barriers between what are arguably the two most competitive ‘rival’ game companies, those working in the PlayStation division of Sony reportedly felt “blindsided” by the partnership.

The news comes by way of a report from Bloomberg, which states that Sony’s senior management apparently went into negotiations with Microsoft “largely without the involvement of the PlayStation unit.” Any news that a company is now working together with its biggest rival can be cause for concern from within, especially if the employees of the company weren’t briefed about it prior to the public reveal. The report also suggests that leadership within the PlayStation division had their work cut out for them in order to quell emotions.

Managers had to calm workers and assure them that plans for the company’s next-generation console weren’t affected”

Another thing to note is that we still don’t know how far the partnership between Sony and Microsoft will go. What we do know is that Microsoft will seemingly be powering the PlayStation 5’s game streaming service, with Sony reportedly bringing its “cutting-edge image sensors” to the table in return. Ultimately, all we can do for now is wait and see what comes of the partnership, unless one of the companies decides to pull out on the deal.
