PlayStation 5 Sales Top 7.8 Million Units Worldwide

PlayStation 5 Sales

As the new generation of video game consoles kicked off last year, Sony seems to have made all of the right moves possible to put their best foot forward with the PlayStation 5. The console had several key launch titles to help spur demand for the PS5, with plans to only continue providing the PS5 with more exclusives than any of their previous PlayStation consoles. Combined with a well-supported digital services system and the DualSense controller’s nifty new features, and it’s no wonder the PS5 has been successful. Now we know exactly how successful with the new PlayStation 5 sales numbers for the fiscal year.

As reported by Game Informer, Sony has recently released their sales data as a part of their 2020 fiscal year ended on March 31st, 2021. For the fiscal year examined, Sony saw an increase in their hardware sales over the previous year, which it acknowledges was in no small part due to the launch of the PlayStation 5. As of the release of the financial reports, PlayStation 5 sales have reportedly reached 7.8 million units sold worldwide. The PS5 had already been confirmed to have been the fastest selling console in US history, even with supply issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this success seems to be fairly sizeable worldwide as well.

PS5 Production Issues Due To Semiconductor Shortage, Says Sony

Forecasts of Sony’s 2021 fiscal year have already begun to show Sony’s game and network services at the top of the company’s best-performing divisions, with sales and operating profits all expected to surpass even Sony’s other electronics product lines that they built their worldwide empire upon. With PlayStation 5 sales helping the company reach record revenues of $25.04 billion in the 2020 fiscal year, Sony doesn’t show any signs of slowing down their hot streak in this new year. If supply of the PlayStation 5 improves soon, then those records will only keep adding trophies to Sony’s case.
