The Outer Worlds Companions Are Optional, They Can Abandon You

Outer Worlds Companions

The Outer Worlds has many gamers intrigued, especially fans of Obsidian Entertainment’s previous projects. The game has shown similarities to previous Obsidian games, including Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II. One aspect that has been present in several past Obsidian games is companions, and it has been confirmed that The Outer Worlds will indeed have a similar companion feature as well. Now, Obsidian Entertainment has provided more details about what they have planned for The Outer Worlds companions system, including some unexpected new features.

GameInformer recently shared an interview they held with The Outer Worlds Senior Narrative Designer Megan Starks. The companion system will be quite similar to those seen in previous Obsidian games, but Outer Worlds will add an extra component to make this system have more weight and consequences with how the player treats their companions. The game’s companions can choose to leave the player based on how they are treated, as Starks states:

Even if you lose a points-based morale system, I think you gain something by hand-crafting specific moments where a companion is like, “Why would you do this? You’re completely out of your mind!’” And that also gives the player an interesting opportunity to say, “You might be thinking that, but here are my reasons why…” and sometimes we can attach that to a persuade or leadership check, and that helps the player feel more rewarded.”

For those that would prefer to make their player character a lone wolf, Starks also promises that companions are by no means required for a player to progress in the game. “You can have a full, complete experience of our game – minus the companion content – if you never recruit them. But at the same time, we do want them to feel very involved for players who choose to bring them along.” It’s nice to see that Obsidian is catering to every type of player, and is making steps to make this companion system different from any they have done before.
