The Outer Worlds’ Length Is “Roughly Comparable” To That Of Star Wars: KOTOR 2

Outer Worlds Length

One of the biggest game reveals to occur at The Game Awards 2018 was the announcement of the new Obsidian Entertainment game, The Outer Worlds. Fans of the developer are eagerly awaiting this new adventure, and are seeing similarities with this IP to previous Obsidian projects like Fallout: New Vegas.

Given that this is a modern experience, many have been assuming that the game has a massive open world that will give the player hundreds of potential hours of gameplay. To provide better clarity and context for their fans’ expectations, Obsidian has now spoken about The Outer Worlds’ length.

GameInformer recently sat down with Obsidian’s Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the co-directors of The Outer Worlds. It seems that the pair are quite aware of the expectations that many have expressed, thinking that The Outer Worlds’ length will be over a hundred hours. The two make it clear in the video that this will not be the case, and that the game’s length will be “roughly comparable to a KOTOR 2”, which was the first big game that the studio developed.

Many gamers who have played through have clocked KOTOR 2 at an average somewhere around 30 hours to get through the story. Elsewhere, the co-directors have agreed with a range of 15 to 40 hours for The Outer Worlds, giving this reasoning for the wide range:

It’s hard for us to come up with the hour limit because it depends on how you play it. We’ve had people play through it in 45 minutes to an hour and some people take 3 to 4 hours to get through it.”

It is true that there are a wide variety of playstyles out there among gamers, and that it is understandable that it makes gameplay length difficult to estimate. Still, it is quite nice that Cain and Boyarsky are disclosing the title’s likely length so far ahead of its release.

While it may disappoint some fans, it will surely help keep players’ expectations in check so that they can properly enjoy the eventual launch of the upcoming experience. To many gamers, it can mean an outer world of difference.
