Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus Series Is A “Standalone Season” For Now
Disney+ continues to be one of the biggest and most successful new challengers in the streaming wars, and it shows no sign of slowing down. Hot off of the success of its first original series The Mandalorian, it seems the streaming service will only further lean into spin-offs of the Star Wars franchise to provide more exclusives and entice more subscribers to the service. Currently, a spin-off focused on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor from Rogue One is in the works alongside a series that will see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now, McGregor has provided an update on the series.
Recently interviewed by ET about his upcoming Apple TV+ series ‘Long Way Up,’ actor Ewan McGregor was also pressed about the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ spin-off. When asked about the production of the series, McGregor claimed that filming is set to begin sometime next Spring. This production update arrives after filming for the series was reportedly delayed due to preliminary scripts for the series being discarded and/or re-written. It is also possible that the COVID-19 pandemic could have further delayed production. On the other hand, the Rogue One prequel series is set to begin filming before the end of the year.
When asked if the Obi-Wan Kenobi series has any chance of lasting beyond a single season, McGregor claims that it is set to be a “standalone season.” Though, the actor implies the decision is not entirely set in stone, saying, “We’ll see. Who knows?” While this is surely an exciting notion, not addressed were the rumors that Star Wars co-star Hayden Christiansen might also reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader to some extent in this new series. Hopefully, that does happen, so we can see the heroes of the prequel trilogy reunite once more for another round of high ground/low ground dynamics.
