Here’s Why The Team Opted Out Of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus Multiplayer

Wolfenstein 2 Multiplayer

A majority of AAA titles these days feature some kind of multiplayer component, regardless of whether or not the game is primarily single player or not.  This has created a new issue within the gaming community where linear titles are slowly fading away. Thankfully there are some developers who believe that there’s nothing wrong with having linear titles, that they can still generate plenty of agency among players. There won’t be a Wolfenstein: The New Colossus multiplayer because MachineGames is one of those on-board with linear games and the storytelling they can produce from them. Though the Wolfenstein series has had some epic multiplayer in the past, the team had a slightly different focus this go around.

Earlier this year, Machine Games’ narrative designer Tommy Tordsson Björk explained that while many critics are agreeing that linear titles are no longer economically viable, MachineGames and Bethesda believe that it is infinitely more difficult to tell the immersive, high quality tales that the team is known for without the use of linear storytelling. With a well crafted story, players will continue to play the title well after the game has been released. Adding in multiplayer components, loot boxes, and more dilutes the single player experience which can be harmful for a title such as Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus.

The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player. Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That’s the danger if you try to do two things at once. We just keep our heads together, and focus on making a really good single-player game. Doing our thing is what makes the game great.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus releases for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on October 27th.
