New Returnal Patch Resolves Game-Breaking Save Issue

These poor Returnal players can’t seem to catch a break. Following its recent release, the PS5 exclusive rogue-like from developer Housemarque was set to receive its very first post-launch patch yesterday. Unfortunately, said patch brought with it a game-breaking bug that affected save data, prompting the developer to revert the patch and basically tell players to stop playing until the issue is fixed. Some hours later the patch has finally arrived, resolving the save data bug while also fixing a few other miscellaneous issues.

Returnal developer Housemarque took to its official website to break down the patch notes for update 1.3.4. According to the developer, the patch reverts Returnal back to the previous stable build (1.3.1) while also addressing a Trophies issue and plugging up a keyboard exploit. Info on patch 1.3.5 will be released in the near future, but in the meantime the developer has released a breakdown on the fallout from the patch 1.3.3 bug for those affected by it. See below:

  • Some game saves will have become corrupted with Patch 1.3.3, but maintained their file size. Players with those save games are able to safely continue their progress after installing Patch 1.3.4, without the need for using a backed up save game.

  • Unfortunately other save games will have been effectively “deleted” by Patch 1.3.3, with their file size reducing to 0KB. These save games are not directly salvageable by Patch 1.3.4, without a backup save game available.

  • In those cases, please try using a backed up save from PS+ if available, after installing Patch 1.3.4. With an intact save game from PS+, players can safely restore and continue playing with Patch 1.3.4 installed.

  • Depending on the console settings, the cloud save may have been overwritten by the “deleted” save game noted above. If this is the case, progress will remain unsalvageable, even with Patch 1.3.4.

Unfortunately it seems that those hit by the patch 1.3.3 bug either lost their save files, had to redownload the game, or both. At least the issue is finally resolved so players can get back to doing all that dying! Our review round-up for Returnal can be viewed right here.

Returnal is now available exclusively for PS5.
