New Returnal Patch Pulled Following Game-Breaking Bug

The PS5 exclusive Returnal received its very first patch today, offering players a multitude of fixes and small tweaks to the well-received rogue-like. Unfortunately the patch has been reverted mere hours after its release due to a game-breaking bug affecting player’s save data. Now, developer Housemarque has issued a statement regarding the bug and what existing players will need to do in order to fix their games.

Developer Housemarque took to Twitter to announce that Returnal patch 1.3.3 has been pulled, with the studio reverting the game back to 1.3.1 until a fix is put into place. The developer states that they are working on fixing the issue now, with a new patch expected to go live within a few hours. Unfortunately, all users affected by the 1.3.3 bug will need to re-download their game. As noted below, Housemarque recommends that folks don’t play the game until the new patch that fixes everything is live and available to download.

It’s an interesting scenario, as previously the developer suggested that players turn off the auto-update feature on their PS5 in order to preserve their current ‘run’ in Returnal. Those that chose to do so didn’t download the patch today, presumably, and as such they are free and clear to keep playing on version 1.3.1 until the fix for 1.3.3 is live. It will likely be in place within “a few hours,” according to Housemarque, so likely at some point on May 6.

Returnal is now available exclusively on PS5.
