New Destiny 2 Release Date Announced to Reduce Stress on Servers

Destiny 2 has certainly made a few surprising splashes in the gaming world since its announcement earlier this year. With the trailers showcasing a hilarious combo of fan favourites with their familiar humor with that of the severe fight for survival found within the narrative, the hype is real for the sequel from Bungie. As with any game that sets heavily in online play, server status is always a concern – even more so at launch time. Because of this, the team behind the shooter are sliding the release date up a little bit  to “mitigate” the number of players overloading the servers. The Destiny 2 director spoke more about their reasoning for this move:

We were looking at a bunch of logistics; the technical diligence. Our games at Bungie historically have their highest concurrency on the Saturday of their first week. And so, by going out on a Friday, I think we were putting our technical teams at a risk.”

It makes sense – by moving the release date to Wednesday instead of the original Friday launch, that will allow the tech side of the developing team time to filter in the player-base while preparing for the full weekend rush of excited gamers. This works out for fans of the franchise because not only are they getting the title a little earlier than expected, now releasing on September 6th, but they will also have a smoother immersion experience with adequate server support.

For my fellow PC gamers, this news is entirely irrelevant unfortunately. The new Destiny 2 release date is only applicable to console players for both the PlayStation and Xbox current systems – PC players will still have to wait until October to get their hands on the newest adventure.

Excited for Destiny 2? The beta periods are looming closer come July to suit up and dive in. PS4 pre-orders will have their beta access on July 18th with Xbox players on July 19th. Didn’t pre-order? No worries, the general access beta will commence shortly after on July 21st, though once again – PC players are left in the lurch. No solid dates yet on the PC beta, but word is that it will be sometime during August.

Destiny 2 launches on September 6th for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players, with a PC release for October 24th. Are your Guardians ready?
